Manglik Dosha (Mangal Dosha)

मांगलिक दोष — मंगल दोष

Manglik dosha, also called Mangal dosha or kuja dosha, is the placement of Mars in certain houses of a birth chart. Within traditional Vedic astrology it is one of the most commonly raised concerns before a marriage — and also one of the most commonly overstated, because the classical texts that describe it also describe a long list of conditions under which it is held to be cancelled.

The houses that cause it

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is traditionally said to constitute the dosha. The 2nd house is included in North Indian practice and often omitted in South Indian practice, which is one reason two astrologers can reach different verdicts on the same chart.

The count is also taken from more than one reference point. Most commonly it is checked from the lagna, from the Moon and from Venus. A chart can show the placement from one reference and not from another, and a reading that mentions only the lagna is telling you a third of the picture.

The cancellation conditions

Classical sources list a number of circumstances under which the dosha is considered nullified — among them Mars occupying its own sign or its sign of exaltation, Mars being aspected by or conjunct Jupiter, certain placements for particular ascendants, and the maturity of the individuals concerned. Several texts hold that the dosha diminishes with age.

The most widely cited principle in matchmaking is that where both partners' charts show the placement, it is traditionally held to cancel between them.

These are traditional rules within a tradition, recorded here because they are part of what the tradition actually says. They are frequently omitted when the dosha is raised, and the omission causes a great deal of avoidable distress.

What AaradhyaHub shows

The free Kundli reports the placement from all three reference points — lagna, Moon and Venus — rather than the single view that is easiest to state, and it lists which of the traditional cancellation conditions are present in that chart.

In the Kundli Milan reading, the same check is run on both charts, including the mutual-cancellation rule.

How much weight to give it

Astrology is a system of traditional belief, and AaradhyaHub presents it as one. A placement in a chart is not a prediction about a marriage, and no reading on this site — or anywhere — determines whether a marriage will succeed.

Where a family is weighing a match, the useful role of the chart is to be one input among many, read accurately and in full, including its own exceptions. That is what the calculation here is built to give you.

Common questions

Am I Manglik if Mars is in the 2nd house?

By North Indian convention yes; by common South Indian convention the 2nd house is not counted. The free Kundli shows the placement and which houses it falls in from each reference point, so you can see exactly what is being claimed rather than only the verdict.

Can two Mangliks marry?

The most widely cited rule in the tradition holds that where both charts carry the placement, it is considered to cancel between them. This is one of the standard cancellation conditions rather than an exception to the rule.

Does Manglik dosha go away with age?

Several classical sources hold that its effect diminishes with maturity, and ages in the late twenties are commonly cited. Opinion within the tradition is not uniform on this point.

Is Manglik dosha scientifically proven?

No. Vedic astrology is a traditional system of belief, not an empirical science, and nothing on this site should be read as a scientific claim or as a prediction of any outcome.
