Shiv Puja is the household worship of Bhagwan Shiv at the Shivling — an abhishek of water and milk, the offering of bilva leaves, and the mantras and aarti that go with them. It is the simplest and most widely kept of the Shaiva rituals: what a family performs on Mahashivratri, on the Mondays of Shravan, or on any Monday of the year.

When Shiv Puja is performed
Mahashivratri, on the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight of Phalguna, is the principal occasion; the night is traditionally divided into four prahars with a puja in each. The month of Shravan belongs to Shiva, and its Mondays are kept by many families as a vrat with the puja. Pradosh and the monthly Shivratri recur through the year.
Beyond those, Monday is his day, and families hold the puja on a birthday, an anniversary, or at the start of a sixteen-Monday vrat.
What happens during Shiv Puja
After Ganesh puja and sankalp, the Shivling is bathed with water and Gangajal, then milk, and in a fuller puja with panchamrit. Sandal paste and bhasma are applied, and bilva leaves — three-lobed and unbroken — are placed on the ling with the Panchakshari mantra, Om Namah Shivaya. White flowers, dhatura and fruit are offered.
The pandit recites the mantras of the puja along with texts such as the Shiva Panchakshara Stotra or the Rudrashtakam, and closes with the Shiv aarti. Tulsi and the ketaki flower are traditionally not offered to Shiva, and the water that has flowed over the ling is not crossed when walking around it.
Shiv Puja or Rudrabhishek — which to book
The two are related but not the same. Rudrabhishek is the longer Vedic rite in which the abhishek is performed to the chanting of the Sri Rudram, with a wider sequence of offerings. Shiv Puja is the pujan and abhishek without the full Rudram — the right choice for a regular Monday or a family's Shivratri observance at home.

What is the difference between Shiv Puja and Rudrabhishek?
Rudrabhishek is performed to the chanting of the Sri Rudram and is the longer Vedic rite. Shiv Puja is the pujan and abhishek with bilva leaves and the Panchakshari mantra, without the full Rudram.
Can Shiv Puja be performed at home without a Shivling?
Yes. The pandit brings a Shivling for the ceremony if you do not have one, and will advise whether to keep it afterwards.
Can Shiv Puja be performed online?
Yes. The pandit recites the mantras over video call and guides you through the abhishek and each offering at your own altar. Many families do this for the Mondays of Shravan.
