🪔 Bhagavad Gita Path · भगवद्गीता पाठ
Also called Gita Paath · Shrimad Bhagavad Gita recitation · गीता पाठ
The Bhagavad Gita is the seven hundred verses Krishna speaks to Arjuna on the field of Kurukshetra, set within the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. A Gita Path is its recitation aloud — all eighteen chapters, or the chapters a family has chosen — performed as an act of worship, for steadiness of mind, and very often for the peace of someone who has died.

When a Gita Path is held
Gita Jayanti, on the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, marks the day the Gita was spoken and is the annual occasion. Ekadashi in any month is suitable, and many families keep a regular path.
The Gita is also recited in the days after a death and at the terahvin, on a death anniversary, and during Pitru Paksha. Families hold it too at a time of decision or anxiety — the situation the text itself begins from.
What happens during the Bhagavad Gita Path
The pandit begins with Ganesh puja, the worship of Krishna and of the book itself, and the sankalp. The Gita Dhyanam — the verses of meditation that precede the text — is recited, and then the chapters in order.
A full path covers all eighteen. Where the time or the occasion calls for less, particular chapters are chosen: the twelfth, on devotion, and the fifteenth are often recited on their own, and the second, on the self that does not die, where the path is held for someone departed. The Gita Mahatmya is read at the close, followed by aarti. A havan can be added if the family wants one.
Arranging a Gita Path at home
You will need an image of Krishna, a copy of the Gita on a stand, tulsi leaves, flowers, a ghee lamp, incense and prasad. The pandit sends the complete list.
Tell us when you book whether you want the full eighteen chapters or selected ones, and whether you would like the meaning explained in Hindi as the pandit goes — that makes a longer sitting, and one the family usually values more. If the path is for someone who has passed away, give their name and gotra for the sankalp.
