🎂 Ayushya Havan · आयुष्य हवन
Also called Ayush Homam · Birthday havan · Janamdin Puja · जन्मदिन हवन
Ayushya Havan is the fire ritual performed on a birthday, offering prayers for a long and healthy life in the year ahead. Ayush means lifespan. Where a modern birthday looks back at the year that has passed, this rite looks forward: the family gathers around the fire and asks for protection, health and strength for the person whose day it is.

When Ayushya Havan is performed
Traditionally on the janma nakshatra — the day each year when the moon returns to the star it occupied at birth, in the month of birth — rather than on the calendar date. The two usually fall within days of each other. The pandit works out the nakshatra day from the birth details; if you prefer the calendar birthday, the havan can be held then.
A child's first birthday is the most common occasion, and many families hold it every year through childhood. It is also performed for adults, and for elders at the milestones of sixty, seventy and eighty years.
What happens during Ayushya Havan
The pandit begins with Ganesh puja, sankalp naming the person with their gotra and nakshatra, and kalash sthapana. Navagraha puja follows, and the birth nakshatra's own deity is worshipped.
The havan is then lit and offerings of ghee and samagri are made with the Ayushya mantras, which ask for a full span of life, and with the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. After purnahuti the person is blessed with the water of the kalash, the elders give their blessings, and aarti and prasad close the ceremony.
Arranging a birthday havan at home
Share the date, time and place of birth when you book so the nakshatra day and the sankalp are right. You will need a havan kund, ghee, samagri, a kalash, coconut, flowers, fruit and sweets; the pandit sends the full list.
For a small child, hold the havan in a well-aired room, keep the child at a distance from the smoke, and tell the pandit — he will keep the sitting short and have a parent make the offerings on the child's behalf.
