Sacred thread ceremony

Also called Janeu Sanskar · Yagnopavit Sanskar · Thread ceremony · जनेऊ संस्कार

Upanayana is the sacred thread ceremony — the sanskar in which a boy receives the yagnopavit, the janeu, and is taught the Gayatri mantra. The word means being led near: to the teacher, and to study. Those who have received it are called dvija, twice-born, because the tradition counts this initiation as a second birth, into learning and responsibility.

When Upanayana is performed

The texts give an early age — around eight — as the proper time, since the rite was the start of a boy's Vedic education. Today many families hold it between seven and sixteen, and it is very common to perform it shortly before a wedding where it was not done in childhood.

The muhurat matters a great deal for this sanskar. The pandit fixes it from the boy's birth details, generally in the months when the sun is in its northern course, and will tell you which dates are open.

What happens during the Upanayana Sanskar

The ceremony opens with Ganesh puja, sankalp and the worship of the family's deities. The boy's head is shaved or his hair trimmed, he bathes and puts on new, unstitched cloth. The yagnopavit — three strands, standing in one common explanation for the debts owed to the rishis, the ancestors and the gods — is consecrated and placed over his left shoulder.

The havan is lit, and then comes the centre of the rite: Brahmopadesha. Under a cloth held over the two of them, the father or the acharya whispers the Gayatri mantra into the boy's right ear. He then takes his first bhiksha, asking alms from his mother before anyone else, and the elders give their blessings.

Your family's vidhi, and what to arrange

The Upanayana differs by Veda shakha and by community — in the mantras, the order of rites and the customs around them. Tell us your gotra, your shakha if you know it, and the tradition your family follows, and we assign a pandit who performs that vidhi.

You will need the janeu, a dhoti and upper cloth for the boy, a danda if your custom uses one, a havan kund with samagri, and the items for the bhiksha. The pandit sends the full list. Ask him, too, to show the boy how the thread is worn and kept — it is part of what the day is for.
