Vastu Shanti is the worship of Vastu Purusha — the presiding spirit of a site — and of the deities of the eight directions, performed so that a home or workplace is settled and peaceful for the people who use it. It is the ritual families turn to when they move into a house that already exists, after major renovation, or when a building they cannot alter does not follow vastu principles.

When Vastu Shanti is performed
Most often before a family first occupies a home, either on its own or as part of Griha Pravesh, which includes the vastu rites. It is also held after structural changes — a floor added, a kitchen or entrance moved — and when a family takes over a resale flat or a rented house and wishes to begin afresh there.
Offices, shops and factories hold it for the same reasons. The date is fixed by muhurat: the pandit checks the tithi, weekday and nakshatra against the family's details, and the months avoided for Griha Pravesh are generally avoided for this as well.
What happens during the ceremony
The pandit begins with Ganesh puja, sankalp and kalash sthapana, followed by navagraha puja for the nine planets. The Vastu mandala is then drawn — a grid in which Vastu Purusha and the deities who hold each part of him are placed — and each is invoked and offered worship in turn, beginning from the north-east.
A havan follows in the main room or at the centre of the house, the Brahmasthan, with offerings made into the fire for the Vastu deities. In some traditions a small Vastu image is buried or placed in the south-east after the ritual. The ceremony ends with purnahuti, aarti and prasad, and water from the kalash is sprinkled through every room.
What Vastu Shanti is, and is not
The ritual is traditionally held to pacify the faults of a site that cannot practically be corrected — a staircase where vastu would not place one, an entrance facing an unfavoured direction. It is a religious observance for the peace of the household. It does not alter a building, and it is not a substitute for structural or safety work a property actually needs.
You will need a clean, cleared space for the havan, with windows that can be opened for the smoke, and the samagri on the list your pandit sends once the booking is confirmed. If you want the ritual to follow a particular regional custom, say so when you book.

Is Vastu Shanti different from Griha Pravesh?
Griha Pravesh is the ceremony of first entering a home and includes vastu rites within it. Vastu Shanti on its own is performed when there is no first entry to mark — after renovation, in a house the family already lives in, or for an office or shop.
Can Vastu Shanti be done in a rented house or a flat?
Yes. The worship is for the peace of the people living there and does not depend on owning the property. In a flat the havan is kept small, and the pandit will advise on what the building allows.
How long does Vastu Shanti take?
About two and a half hours, including the navagraha puja and the havan.
Do we need a vastu consultant as well?
Not for the ritual. A vastu consultant advises on the layout of a building; the pandit performs the worship. They are separate services, and this booking is for the pooja.
