💍 Sagai Ceremony · सगाई
Also called Roka · Engagement ceremony · Tilak · Vagdaan · रोका
Sagai is the engagement — the ceremony at which two families formally agree to a marriage. Its older name is Vagdaan, the giving of one's word, and that is what the rite is: a promise made before the deities and the elders of both sides. The rings and the gifts are how the promise is marked, and the puja is what makes it a commitment rather than a party.

Roka, tilak and sagai
The names overlap and are used differently in different communities. In many Punjabi and North Indian families the roka is the first, smaller ceremony that settles the match, and the sagai or ring ceremony follows later. Elsewhere a tilak, in which the bride's family honours the groom, is the main rite. Some families combine all of it in one sitting.

What happens during the Sagai ceremony
The pandit begins with Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana, and takes the sankalp with both families present. The elders of each side state their consent to the match, and the bride and groom are each honoured with a tilak and gifts — clothes, sweets, fruit, a coconut — by the other family.
The couple then exchange rings while the pandit recites the mantras of blessing. In some families the wedding date is fixed and written out at this point as the lagna patrika. Aarti and the blessings of the elders close the ceremony.
Arranging a Sagai, and planning the wedding from it
You will need a kalash, coconut, roli, akshat, flowers, sweets, fruit, the rings, and the gifts each family is giving. The pandit sends the list for your custom before the day.
If you want the wedding muhurat chosen at the sagai, share both birth details when you book, so the pandit arrives with dates already worked out. The same pandit can be booked for the wedding itself, which many families prefer.
