🌙 Karwa Chauth Puja · करवा चौथ पूजा
Also called Karva Chauth Katha · Karak Chaturthi · करवा चौथ व्रत कथा
Karwa Chauth is the fast married women keep for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands, observed on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik. The day is a nirjala vrat — no food and no water from sunrise until the moon is sighted — and its centre is the evening puja, where the women of a family or a neighbourhood sit together, hear the vrat katha and worship before the moon rises.

How the day of Karwa Chauth runs
In many North Indian households the day begins before dawn with sargi, a meal sent by the mother-in-law and eaten before sunrise. The fast then holds through the day. In the late afternoon the women dress as they did for their wedding, gather with their puja thalis, and the katha is read.
The fast is broken only after moonrise. The moon is viewed through a sieve or a dupatta, arghya of water is offered to it, and the husband then gives his wife the first sip of water and the first morsel of food. Moonrise in Delhi NCR falls at a different minute each year, so the puja is timed backwards from it — your pandit fixes the start once the date is booked.
What happens during Karwa Chauth Puja
The puja is offered to Gauri — worshipped on this day as Chauth Mata — along with Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya. The pandit begins with Ganesh puja and sankalp, establishes the karwa, the small earthen pot the vrat is named for, filled with water and covered, and leads the worship of the goddess with roli, akshat, flowers and sweets.
The vrat katha follows. The best-known telling is the story of Veeravati, who was tricked by her brothers into breaking her fast before the moon had risen, and of what it took to restore what she lost. Where several women observe together the thalis are passed around the circle while the katha songs are sung. The pandit closes with aarti and tells the gathering the moonrise time for the evening.
Arranging a Karwa Chauth Puja at home or for a society
Each woman observing brings her own thali: a karwa, a diya, roli, akshat, sindoor, a sieve, a small pot of water for the arghya, sweets and the items of suhaag she will gift afterwards. The pandit sends the list for the household's custom ahead of the day — the contents differ between Punjabi, Rajasthani and Uttar Pradesh families, and he will follow yours.
The katha is very often held for a group — a residents' association, a temple hall, an extended family. Tell us roughly how many women will sit for it when you book, so the pandit plans the seating and the time the thali-passing takes.
Karwa Chauth Puja · करवा चौथ पूजा — common questions
What time is the Karwa Chauth Puja performed?
In the evening, before moonrise. The pandit sets the start time from that day's moonrise in your city, so the katha and aarti are complete before the moon is sighted.
Can one pandit perform the katha for a whole society?
Yes, and it is the usual arrangement. Tell us the approximate number of women when you book so the gathering is planned properly.
How long does the Karwa Chauth Puja take?
About ninety minutes for the puja, the katha and the aarti. A large gathering takes a little longer because of the thali-passing.
Can unmarried women keep the Karwa Chauth vrat?
In some families betrothed and unmarried women do keep it. Customs differ, so follow your own family's practice — the pandit will perform the puja accordingly.
Can the Karwa Chauth katha be heard online?
Yes. The pandit performs the puja and reads the vrat katha over video call, and guides you through the thali pujan at your own altar. It is the common choice for women living away from family.
