Rashi (Moon Sign) in Vedic Astrology
Rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment of birth — the Moon sign. In Vedic astrology this, not the Sun sign, is the sign most readings are built around, and it is the sign that nearly all traditional matchmaking is calculated from. When an Indian family asks 'what is your rashi', the Moon sign is what they mean.
Why the Moon rather than the Sun
Classical Vedic texts treat the Moon as the significator of the mind — manas — and therefore of temperament, emotional disposition and the inner life. The Sun is read as the significator of the self, vitality and authority, and it is genuinely used, but not as the headline sign.
There is also a practical reason the Moon dominates matchmaking: the Ashtakoota system that produces the 36-guna score is calculated almost entirely from the two Moon signs and the two birth nakshatras.
The twelve rashis and their lords
The twelve signs are Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces).
Each has a ruling planet: Mars rules Mesha and Vrishchika, Venus rules Vrishabha and Tula, Mercury rules Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon rules Karka, the Sun rules Simha, Jupiter rules Dhanu and Meena, and Saturn rules Makara and Kumbha. The relationship between two people's rashi lords is what the Graha Maitri koota scores in matchmaking.
Why your rashi may differ from the sign you were told
Vedic astrology is sidereal — it measures positions against the fixed stars. Western astrology is tropical, measured against the equinox, which has drifted by roughly 24 degrees over the past two millennia.
The practical result is that a sidereal placement usually falls one sign earlier than the tropical one. Someone told they are a Sagittarius by a Western horoscope will often find their Vedic Sun sign is Scorpio — and their rashi, being the Moon's sign, may be different again.

Is rashi the same as nakshatra?
No. The rashi is one of twelve signs of 30 degrees each. The nakshatra is one of twenty-seven lunar mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. Both are read from the Moon's position, and a rashi spans roughly two and a quarter nakshatras.
Does my rashi decide the first letter of my name?
By custom, yes in many families — a naming syllable is traditionally taken from the pada, the quarter of the nakshatra the Moon occupied, rather than from the rashi itself. The chart shows both the nakshatra and the pada.
How accurate does my birth time need to be for the rashi?
Much less than for the lagna. The Moon takes roughly two and a quarter days to cross a sign, so an error of an hour or two rarely changes the rashi. It can change the nakshatra, which the Moon crosses in about a day.
