Lagna (Ascendant) in a Kundli
The lagna, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth. It is the first thing a Vedic chart is built from: the lagna becomes the first house, and every other house follows from it in order. This is why two people born on the same day in the same city can be read quite differently — if their birth times differ by a couple of hours, their lagna differs, and with it the entire frame of the chart.
Why the birth time matters to the minute
The ascendant moves through the full zodiac once every twenty-four hours, which works out at roughly one degree every four minutes and a whole sign roughly every two hours. A birth time recorded to the nearest hour can therefore place the lagna in the wrong sign altogether.
This is the single largest source of disagreement between two readings of what should be the same chart. If your recorded birth time is approximate — and on many Indian birth certificates it is — treat the lagna, the house positions and anything derived from them as provisional. The Moon's sign and nakshatra are far more forgiving, because the Moon takes about two and a quarter days to cross a sign.
Lagna, rashi and sun sign are three different things
Popular astrology in English almost always means the Sun sign when it says 'sign'. Vedic astrology rarely does. The lagna is the sign rising at birth; the rashi is the sign the Moon occupied; the sun sign is the sign the Sun occupied.
In practice, most traditional readings lean on the lagna and the rashi, and matchmaking uses the rashi almost exclusively. If a Vedic reading seems to contradict a horoscope column you have read, this is usually why — and there is a second reason: Vedic astrology is sidereal, measured against the fixed stars, while Western astrology is tropical. The two differ by roughly 24 degrees at present.
What the lagna sets up in the rest of the chart
Because the lagna is the first house, it fixes which sign governs every subsequent house — the second, the fourth, the seventh and so on. It therefore also fixes the house lords: the planet ruling each house's sign, which is how classical texts connect one area of life to another.
Traditionally the lagna and its lord are read as the frame of the whole chart — constitution, disposition, the way a person meets the world — and the strength of the lagna lord is one of the first things a reading assesses.
How AaradhyaHub calculates it
The lagna is computed from your date, exact time and the latitude and longitude of your birthplace, using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa and whole-sign houses — the sidereal convention used by the Indian government's calendar and by most Indian astrologers.
The chart is free to view and needs no account. The reading names your lagna, the lagna lord and where that lord sits, alongside the rashi and nakshatra.

What if I do not know my exact birth time?
You can still generate a chart, and the Moon's sign, nakshatra and the Vimshottari dasha will be broadly reliable, since the Moon moves slowly enough to tolerate an hour or two of error. The lagna and the house placements will not be reliable. Traditional astrologers use a process called birth-time rectification to narrow an uncertain time against known life events; that is a consultation, not a calculation.
Is lagna the same as my zodiac sign?
Usually not. The sign given in a newspaper horoscope is the Sun sign, calculated tropically. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, calculated sidereally. They coincide only by coincidence.
Can the lagna change if I was born at a different place?
Yes. The lagna depends on the geographical position as well as the moment, because the horizon differs by location. This is why the birthplace, not just the birth date and time, is required.
