Nadi Dosha in Kundli Matching

नाड़ी दोष

Nadi is the heaviest of the eight kootas in Guna Milan, carrying eight of the thirty-six points. Each of the twenty-seven nakshatras is assigned one of three nadis — Aadi, Madhya or Antya — and where both partners share the same nadi, the tradition records Nadi dosha and awards zero of those eight points. Because of its weight, it is the single most common reason a match is declared unfavourable.

The three nadis

The twenty-seven nakshatras divide into three groups of nine. Aadi, Madhya and Antya are described in classical sources in terms of constitutional type, and the grouping is fixed — it is a property of the nakshatra, not something calculated per chart.

Same nadi for both partners produces the dosha; different nadis award the full eight points. There is no partial score for this koota.

The classical cancellation conditions

The tradition that records the dosha also records the circumstances under which it is held not to apply. The most commonly cited are: both partners born under the same nakshatra but in different padas; the two nakshatras sharing a nadi but having the same lord; and the two Moon signs being the same while the nakshatras differ.

Several sources also hold that the dosha does not apply where the rashi lords are the same, and various remedial observances are prescribed. These conditions are part of the classical material, and they are omitted far more often than they are applied.

Why it is worth reading carefully

Because Nadi carries eight points, a pairing that is otherwise well matched can fall below the conventional threshold of 18 on this factor alone. A score of 17 with full marks on six kootas describes a very different pairing from a score of 17 spread thinly, and the sum does not distinguish them.

AaradhyaHub's free Kundli Milan shows each koota's contribution separately, including whether Nadi scored and why, so the result can be read rather than merely received.

What it is not

Nadi dosha is a feature of a traditional matching system, not a finding about health, fertility or the future of a relationship. Classical texts describe it in constitutional terms; those descriptions are part of a belief system and are not medical statements.

Nothing calculated on this site is a prediction about a marriage.

Common questions

Can a marriage go ahead with Nadi dosha?

That is a decision for the families involved, and the tradition itself records several conditions under which the dosha is considered not to apply — including the two nakshatras sharing a lord, or the partners sharing a nakshatra in different padas. Many families also consult an astrologer about prescribed remedial observances.

Why does Nadi carry so many points?

It carries 8 of 36, the largest single weighting in the Ashtakoota system, and classical sources treat it as the most serious of the eight. That weighting is a convention of the system rather than a measured quantity.

Is Nadi dosha about health or children?

Classical texts describe the nadis in constitutional terms and some later commentary extends this to progeny. These are traditional beliefs within an astrological system. They are not medical claims, and should not be treated as any kind of health assessment.
