महत्व · Significance
Makar Sankranti marks the Sun's entry into Makara (Capricorn) and the start of Uttarayan. It is one of the few festivals fixed by the solar calendar, which is why it falls on nearly the same date each year.
A holy bath, the giving of til, gur and khichdi in charity, and kite flying are all traditional. The same day is kept as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri the evening before in Punjab, and Uttarayan in Gujarat.
